The ultimate "Walk-about-lens" grail?

Sigma will release a new lens, more on DPreview: Sigma 18-250mm F3.5-6.3 DC OS HSM

"January 14, 2009: The Sigma Corporation is pleased to announce the launch of new SIGMA 18-250mm F3.5-6.3 DC OS HSM on March 10th, 2009. The SIGMA 18-250mm F3.5-6.3 DC OS HSM incorporates Sigma’s original anti-shake compensation function, with a 13.8 times zoom ratio. As opposed to having an anti-shake function in the camera body, this lens’s Hybrid Optical Stabilizer provides not only an anti-shake function for the camera body, but also compensates for image shaking in the view finder as the Optical Stabilizer is built in to the lens.

Lens Mount Canon, Nikon, Pentax, Sigma, Sony"

I'll keep my eyes open for reviews on this one, super zooms tend to have some image quality issues. If it's good, it will be (hopefully) a cheaper option than the Nikon 18-200 VR super zoom.

Would be nice to se a side-by-side comparison with the relatively recently released
Tamron 18-250mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II Macro

Well, the search for the "one lens to rule them all" will never end...

  1. If it's anything like bikes: Just give up on finding "do it all"-equipment and go for specialized instead.

    Compromises is never as fun.

  2. Well, when travelling or alike, it's nice to get decent imagaes without dragging all you gear with you. Then one can accept certain compromises. =)
